Mac OS X 10.5.2 is packing hefty fixes, due January

As much love as Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard has received in the press and from users, there are still plenty of bugs that need ironing out. Lucky for those users and those not-easily-embarrassed members of the press, Apple seems to be addressing most of those remaining bugs with its 10.5.2 update, which it just seeded to developers. There are apparently 76 fixes listed in the release notes, ranging from fan-faves like MacBook AirPort funkiness to obscure gems like Rosetta PowerPC compatibility memory leaks. This is just the first distribution of the update, and a release to users is rumored to hit mid-January, coinciding with new hardware at Macworld.

Take Online Media Offline with UnPlug [Firefox Extension]

unplug.pngFirefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Save embedded media like audio, video, or even Flash games to your desktop with the UnPlug Firefox extension. Just browse to a page you want to grab media from, click the little smiling fish (or go to Tools -> UnPlug), and find and download the media on that page you want. UnPlug is similar to previously mentioned Video Downloader extension, which means it should work just as well to download videos from YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, and all the rest of your favorite video sites. UnPlug is free, works wherever Firefox does.

Quick Look Inside Folders

quicklookfolderheader.jpg
Mac OS X Leopard only: You already know how to view zip archive contents and even preview files in the Trash using Leopard’s handy Quick Look feature, and now you can look inside folders, too. Using a Folder Quick Look plug-in, instead of just looking at a big old folder icon when you Quick Look a directory, you can get a file listing of what’s inside. Here’s how to get it working.

  1. "http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/software/folder/download/Folder.qlgenerator02.zip">
Download the Folder Quick Look plug-in
    .
  2. Extract its contents into
    /Users/YOU/Library/QuickLook/. Replace YOU with your
username. You may have to create the final QuickLook folder. Make
sure that the contents of the zip file go here (it’s four files
    total; two are readme’s.)
  3. Relaunch Finder by holding down the Option key and click and
holding on the Dock’s Finder icon. Choose ‘Relaunch’ from the
    context menu.

Then, just select any folder in Finder and hit the Space key to
Quick Look what’s inside. Here’s the result when I Quick Look my
Applications folder, you can
also see hidden files and show the file timestamp using the
checkboxes at the bottom, too. Handy! The plug-in is a free
download for Mac OS X Leopard only. (Don’t forget you can also

M++CARD Combines a Business Card With USB Storage

The benefits of combining USB storage with a business card are obvious. For one thing, it will get you noticed and make your card less dispensable. Second, it is a convenient and logical means to deliver important information to prospective employers and clients. Unfortunately, no one has truly succeeded in this endeavor (and simply printing your information on a thumb drive doesn’t count). At the very least, this concept piece from designer Abhinav Dapke offers something approaching a solution.

Basically a flap on the rear of the card can be used to attach different memory sizes, and a pair of slits can be used for the USB adapter. To be honest, it doesn’t amount to much more than taping a USB drive to an existing card. Still, it is a fairly elegant approach to the problem —but it might make more sense to develop a thin all-in-one usb drive that is specifically designed to hold business cards. So, my guess is that this concept will have to go back to the drawing board a few times before a viable product can be developed. [Coroflot via Core77 via DVICE]
