Picasa for Mac; Better Than iPhoto?

| January 5, 2009 | 0 Comments

picasa-logoGoogle’s blog is announcing the release of Picasa for Mac at MacWorld. Even though they’ve previously released a Picasa Web Albums uploader and iPhone plug-in, the full-featured free software offers Mac users a way to edit, upload, and share video and images, surpassing iPhoto in feature set and maybe even usability.

You’re probably thinking, ‘I’m already using iPhoto, so what’s the big deal?’ That was certainly my first thought too, but then I downloaded the software to test it out, and I changed my tune a bit. Picasa for Mac pulls in images and videos stored anywhere on your hard drive, lets you edit and tweak, save changes, and of course upload them to Picasa.

Picasa for Mac, which is still a Google Labs application (meaning it’s not perfect), has a feature set that is pretty darn extensive — it would be almost impossible to list them all — but some cool things you might like include the ability to filter by stared images, images with faces, and movies. You can also batch edit photos, create collages and movie clips, publish to Blogger, take video snapshots, one-click upload to YouTube, and a whole lot more.

And even if you’re not ready to chuck iPhoto out the window (I know I’m certainly not), you can still use both tools side by side. In fact, Picasa for Mac lets you run both applications without overwriting changes to your iPhoto library. iPhoto library images, within the Picasa software, are treated as read-only, so any photo adjustments will create a separate copy of the original image.

Target Gift Cards Double as Digital Cameras

| November 10, 2008 | 0 Comments

Is it a gift card with a digital camera, or a digital camera with a gift card? We’re not quite sure, but this holiday season, Target will begin selling a combo gift card/digital camera, giving customers something to do with their gift certificate other than just spending it while being insulted that a loved one didn’t put a little more thought into the present.

The quality might sound bad, but it’s probably on par with most camera phones. The hardware features a 1.2MP sensor with 8MB of onboard storage holding 50 pictures. If the camera itself sounds useless, realize that it comes bundled with a USB cord, driver disk, instruction manual and a voucher for 40 free prints at Target. The USB cord alone and voucher alone might be worth the hassle, even if you don’t plan on ever using the camera.

Running on two AAA batteries (that’s how they get you!) the digital camera gift certificates will be available at no additional charge (unless ordered online) in denominations ranging from $50 to $1000. Those giving gifts in excess of $100 might consider a name brand digital camera instead. [Target via gamertell and Coolest Gadgets]

This summer I had the chance to visit Hecla Island Campground in Manitoba. It was my first time and I was exited to get some sunset shots. I took quite a few that can be seen on my website. This one is one of 3 of my favourites. I used a 4 stop ND filter to help smooth out the waves. I could have spent many hours there but had to get back to my friends and fun.

75 Percent Of Americans Watching Online Video

| September 10, 2008 | 0 Comments

More people are watching video online than ever, with the percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewing online video now topping 75%.

What’s this mean to you?

In  a few years, your television will be more like your computer than a traditional television.

comScore today released July 2008 data from the comScore Video Metrix service, reporting that Americans viewed more than 11.4 billion videos for a total duration of 558 million hours during the month.

Other notable findings from July 2008 include:

  • Americans spent a total of 558 million hours watching online video during the month.
  • The average online video viewer watched 235 minutes of video.
  • 91 million viewers watched 5 billion videos on YouTube.com (54.8 videos per viewer).
  • 51.4 million viewers watched 400 million videos on MySpace.com (7.8 videos per viewer).
  • The duration of the average online video was 2.9 minutes.

Google Sites Maintains Dominant Position

Google Sites once again ranked as the top U.S. video property with more than 5 billion videos viewed (representing a 44 percent share of the online video market), with YouTube.com accounting for more than 98 percent of all videos viewed at the property. Fox Interactive Media ranked second with 446 million videos (3.9 percent), followed by Microsoft Sites with 282 million (2.5 percent) and Yahoo! Sites with 269 million (2.4 percent). Hulu ranked eighth with 119 million videos, representing 1 percent of all videos viewed.

Photoshop Mobile

Photoshop Mobile

If you were to tell me 10 years ago that cell phones will one day be powerful enough to run Photoshop, I would think that the resident looney house is missing an inmate. Fast forward a decade and you have Photoshop Mobile – although the name is pretty misleading since it doesn’t allow any photo editing, but is actually an online storage service. Photoshop Mobile brings 5GB of free storage space to anyone with a Photoshop.com account ID. Folks who fall under the Photoshop Plus category will get four times that amount. Currently, compatible phones include Motorola Q9m/h, Samsung Blackjack I/II, and Palm Treo 750w/700w/wx. Support for other handsets (such as the iPhone, Pearl and RAZR) will come next month. I guess this is great for folks who snap plenty of images on their cell phones and are too lazy to transfer it over to a computer.

Fuchitek PEP01 Pico Projector

Fuchitek is poised to release its PEP01 pico projector pretty soon, enabling you to make a decent business presentation everywhere you go without having to lug around a large projector. The PEP01 will feature the following :-

  • 640 x 480 resolution
  • Supports NTSC and PAL video systems
