Facebook Hooks Up with Skype

Facebook and Skype may join forces to integrate video and voice chat with the social networking site, the iPad could be capable of running Chrome OS, and Firefox 4 may bring hardware acceleration to the Mac.

Facebook and Skype are working on a broad partnership that will include the integration of the two services through Facebook Connect, according to a person briefed on the plans, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity because the plans were supposed to be confidential. The partnership will be announced in the next few weeks, the person said.

A Facebook spokeswoman and a Skype spokesman declined to comment.

Under the partnership, people who use their Facebook credentials to log in to Skype will be able to see their Facebook friends on Skype. They will also be able to see their news feed and to sent text messages and call their friends’ landlines using Skype.

News of the partnership, which was first reported by the blog AllThingsD, comes as Skype is getting ready for a public offering.

Facebook has sought to blend its social network with popular communications services before, for example tying its service with AIM from AOL in February. And Facebook has said recently that it is planning to integrate its service into some mobile phones, though it denied it was building its own phone.

The tie-up with Skype presents an opportunity for both companies to grow their usage, especially internationally, where Skype has a strong presence.

Set Google Voice as Your Skype Caller ID

by Ian Scott on April 29, 2010

A Google Voice number, one that rings all your phones, makes good sense as the caller ID number for outgoing Skype calls. Google Voice blocked the verification SMS that Skype needed until recently, but Google’s flipped the switch and made it convenient.

John, a Lifehacker reader and fan of Google Voice and Skype, tipped us off to a tweet from a Google Voice team member that indicated the Google Voice/Caller ID setup now works. You’ll have to respond to the SMS sent to your Google Voice number, but once you do, people you call with Skype’s “Skype Out” service won’t see a random string of digits, but a number they can actually call you back on. DeDock Skype was designed to allow users to hide the dock icon while Skype was running. Previously it has been impossible to do this because it would cause skype to crash or not let the user login.

Plantronics DSP 500 Headset

by Ian Scott on October 23, 2008

Intensify your computer digital audio experience. The DSP-500 is perfect for multimedia applications including games, CDs and MP3 music, speech recognition and voice applications.

For me, MAC OS X immediately detected the USB device as a DSP sound processor and the headset was ready to use in a matter of seconds. As far as the headset is concerned, the Plantronics DSP-500 comes with a high quality lightweight headset with a 3 meter long cord, which has a rather modest sized DSP and an in-line volume control attached to it. The 3-inch long attachment is the Digital signal processing unit, which houses all the works that processes sound and sends it directly to the headset.

I use a Plantronics DSP-500 USB Headset for most of my calls using Skype. I am now doing 50% of my calls on Ustream.tv using this headset and Skype people tell me quality is great.

The quality is much better than a cell phone or a landline. It has some amazing DSP noise-canceling technologies.

As far as PC audio is concerned, the DSP-500 is Plantronics’ top of the line offering.
